FAQs

Who is the Adult Jazz Ensemble for?

The Adult Jazz Ensemble is for adult players (18+) at roughly grades 4–8 who want to explore jazz improvisation in a small group setting. It focuses on swing, bebop, and jazz standards.

What instruments are welcome?

Any instrument with a connection to jazz — which is a broad category. Saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass, drums, violin, and more have all played important roles in jazz. Get in touch to discuss whether your instrument is a good fit.

Do I need to be able to improvise to join?

Not fully formed, no. Improvisation is central to what the Adult Jazz Ensemble does, and some comfort with jazz vocabulary is helpful at this level — but the group is a place to develop and deepen those skills, not a place where you need to have already mastered them. If you can play your instrument confidently at around grades 4–8 and have some curiosity about jazz, you will find it a supportive and inspiring environment.

How do I join?

Just get in touch via our Contact or enquiry page and we will let you know about availability and the best way to get started.

Will there be chances to perform?

Yes. Every group at YMM performs at the end-of-term concert, and many groups also play at weekly café concerts and special events throughout the year.
