About this group
Young musicians learn essential creative skills and gain musical confidence through our exciting (and fun!) INNOVATE ensembles.
Students on ANY instrument (including VOICE) and at ANY level, work together to create new original music for performance. Together they will embrace different traditions and techniques to create infectious grooves, classical textures, improvisation, rich harmonies, songs, and the spoken word.
Whatever specialism or experience, all are very welcome. INNOVATE is a place to develop musical voice, build confidence in performance and discover a range of new musical skills in a supportive environment.

Who is Innovate 2 for?
Innovate 2 is for young musicians aged 12–18. It is open to any instrument — including voice — and any level. It is a space for teens to develop their musical voice in a supportive, creative environment.
My child plays a ‘classical’ instrument. Is Innovate right for them?
Yes, without question. Innovate is one of YMM’s most instrument-inclusive groups. Strings, woodwind, brass, piano, guitar, voice, and everything else are equally at home here.
What kind of music does the group make?
Students work together to create original music for performance — exploring grooves, improvisation, harmonies, songs, and the spoken word, drawing on many different musical traditions. It is genuinely creative, collaborative work.
Is this suitable for a complete beginner?
Yes. Innovate 2 welcomes any level, and the group’s ethos is that everyone has something to contribute musically. Students are supported to develop at their own pace within the ensemble.

Will there be chances to perform?
Yes. Every group at YMM performs at the end-of-term concert, and many groups also play at weekly café concerts and special events throughout the year.
