FAQs

Who is Jazz 1 for?

Jazz 1 is an introductory jazz ensemble for players roughly at grades 1–3. It welcomes any instrument that has a connection to jazz — including saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass, drums, violin, and more.

Do I need to play a ‘jazz instrument’ to join?

Not at all. Jazz has always been played on a wide range of instruments, and Jazz 1 reflects that inclusive spirit. If you play an instrument and are around grades 1–3, come and join us.

What kind of music does Jazz 1 play?

Jazz standards, pop arrangements, and film themes — chosen to introduce the joy of playing in a jazz ensemble while building ensemble skills and confidence. Improvisation is gently introduced alongside the written parts.

Will I need to improvise?

Some simple improvisation is introduced, but it is always guided and never intimidating. Jazz 1 is about building confidence and having fun, and students move at their own pace.

How do I join?

Will there be chances to perform?

Yes. Every group at YMM performs at the end-of-term concert, and many groups also play at weekly café concerts and special events throughout the year.
