Students also focus on developing their improvising skills and advanced jazz harmony. FAQs

Who is Jazz 2 (Big Band) for?

Jazz 2 is YMM’s flagship big band, for players at roughly grade 4 and above. It welcomes any instrument with a jazz connection — brass, woodwind, rhythm section, piano, guitar, bass, drums, and strings are all at home in a big band.

Do I need to play a traditional big band instrument?

No. YMM’s big band has always embraced a wide range of instruments. If you play at grade 4 or above and want to experience the thrill of big band music, get in touch and we will discuss how you could be part of it.

What kind of music does the Big Band play?

Classic big band repertoire spanning decades — Ellington, Count Basie, and beyond — alongside contemporary charts. Students also develop improvisation skills and advanced jazz harmony.

Will I need to improvise?

Improvisation is a core part of what the Big Band works on, but you don’t need to arrive with those skills already in place. Students are guided into it progressively — from simple one-note or pentatonic ideas through to more developed jazz language — and always at a pace that feels exciting rather than daunting. The ensemble experience itself is what builds confidence.

How do I join?

Will there be chances to perform?

Yes. Every group at YMM performs at the end-of-term concert, and many groups also play at weekly café concerts and special events throughout the year.
