FAQs

Who is Samba Drumming for?

Samba Drumming is for ages 10–18 with some previous drumming experience. The group covers Afro-Brazilian drumming styles with a main focus on samba, including body percussion, dancing, oral transmission, and Portuguese singing.

What kind of drumming experience do I need?

Some previous drumming is required — enough to pick up rhythms and patterns with guidance. You don’t need formal drum kit training; hand drumming or percussion experience is equally relevant.

Do I need to own drums to join?

No. YMM provides the samba instruments — surdo, caixa, repique, agogô, and more. You just need to bring your energy and enthusiasm.

What makes samba drumming different from other percussion groups?

Samba is a full-body, communal musical experience — rhythms are passed on orally and through movement, and the whole group plays together in a way that creates enormous energy. It is one of the most joyful groups at YMM.

How do I join?

Just get in touch via our Contact or enquiry page and we will let you know about availability and the best way to get started.

Will there be chances to perform?

Yes. Every group at YMM performs at the end-of-term concert, and many groups also play at weekly café concerts and special events throughout the year.
