FAQs
My child has never played a note. Can they really start from scratch?
Absolutely. Cello is a brilliant first instrument — the large body produces a warm, satisfying sound from early on, which is very encouraging for beginners. All lessons are one to one, so the pace is entirely set around the learner.
Do we need a cello at home to practise on?
Yes — regular practice is essential, particularly for developing bow technique and posture. Children's cellos come in fractional sizes. Your tutor can advise on the correct size and the best way to hire or buy at the right stage.
How much practice does cello really need?
A little and often beats one long session. Even a few minutes most days helps technique and musical memory settle, and your tutor will set goals that fit around school and family life. The aim is steady, enjoyable progress rather than pressure.
What kind of music will I get to play?
Cello has one of the richest repertoires of any instrument — from Bach suites and Elgar concertos to jazz and contemporary music. As technique and confidence grow, your tutor will introduce pieces that match your taste and ambitions.
Can I work towards graded music exams?
Yes, if that is something you would like to aim for. Many students enjoy working towards graded exams as a way to mark their progress, while others happily play purely for the joy of it. Lessons can be shaped around either path, so let us know what you are hoping for.
Will there be chances to perform or play with others?
Yes. Cellists can join Junior Strings, Chamber Group, Groove Orchestra, and Innovate groups, with termly concerts to look forward to. Playing in a string group is a wonderful experience and something many students treasure throughout their musical lives.
