My child has never played a note. Can they really start from scratch?
Absolutely. Double bass is a fantastic instrument to begin on — the size can look daunting, but student basses come in smaller sizes and the instrument rewards learners with a big, satisfying sound from the very beginning.
Do we need a double bass at home to practise on?
Yes, though student basses in fractional sizes are widely available to hire, which makes starting out more affordable. Your tutor can advise on the right size and a good hire or purchase option.
How much practice does double bass really need?
A little and often beats one long session. Even a few minutes most days helps technique and musical memory settle, and your tutor will set goals that fit around school and family life. The aim is steady, enjoyable progress rather than pressure.
What kind of music will I get to play?
Double bass is equally at home in classical orchestras, jazz combos, and rock and pop. Styles from classical technique and grades to jazz walking bass and grooves are all available, depending on your interests.
Can I work towards graded music exams?
Yes, if that is something you would like to aim for. Many students enjoy working towards graded exams as a way to mark their progress, while others happily play purely for the joy of it. Lessons can be shaped around either path, so let us know what you are hoping for.
Will there be chances to perform or play with others?
Yes, and bass players are always in demand at YMM. Students can join Junior Strings, Jazz 1, Jazz 2 (Big Band), Adult Jazz Ensemble, Groove Orchestra, and Innovate groups, with termly concerts. Bass players are in demand across all YMM's ensembles.
