FAQs

My child has never played a note. Can they really start from scratch?

Absolutely. Drum kit is one of the most exciting instruments for beginners — there is something deeply satisfying about making a proper groove from early on, and all lessons are one to one, so the pace is entirely set around the learner.

Do we need a drum kit at home to practise on?

Having something to practise on makes a real difference. A full acoustic kit is ideal, but an electronic kit works very well and is much kinder to everyone else in the house. Practice pads are useful for rudiments in between kit sessions. Your tutor can advise on what would suit your space and budget.

How much practice does drum kit really need?

A little and often beats one long session. Even a few minutes most days helps technique and musical memory settle, and your tutor will set goals that fit around school and family life. The aim is steady, enjoyable progress rather than pressure.

What kind of music will I get to play?

Drum kit sits at the heart of almost every genre — rock, pop, jazz, funk, Latin, and world music. As technique and coordination develop, your tutor will introduce grooves and fills that connect with the music you love to listen to.

Can I work towards graded music exams?

Yes, if that is something you would like to aim for. Many students enjoy working towards graded exams as a way to mark their progress, while others happily play purely for the joy of it. Lessons can be shaped around either path, so let us know what you are hoping for.

Will there be chances to perform or play with others?

Yes, and drummers are always in demand across YMM's groups. Students can join Rock & Pop 1 & 2, Jazz 1, Jazz 2 (Big Band), Groove Orchestra, Samba Drumming, and Innovate groups, with termly performance opportunities. Playing live with a band or ensemble is one of the highlights of learning at YMM.
