FAQs

My child has never played a note. Can they really start from scratch?

Absolutely. Saxophone is a fantastic beginner instrument — the fingering system is logical, a good sound comes relatively quickly, and the sheer variety of music you can play keeps motivation high from the start.

Which saxophone should I start on?

Alto saxophone is the most common starting point — it is lighter and easier to hold than tenor, and a lot of beginner tutor books are written for alto. That said, some students start on tenor if they have a strong preference for its sound. Your tutor will advise.

How much practice does saxophone really need?

A little and often beats one long session. Even a few minutes most days helps technique and musical memory settle, and your tutor will set goals that fit around school and family life. The aim is steady, enjoyable progress rather than pressure.

What kind of music will I get to play?

Saxophone is one of the most versatile instruments there is — equally at home in jazz, classical, funk, rock, pop, and Latin music. As technique and confidence grow, your tutor will introduce music from the full range of styles the instrument spans.

Can I work towards graded music exams?

Yes, if that is something you would like to aim for. Many students enjoy working towards graded exams as a way to mark their progress, while others happily play purely for the joy of it. Lessons can be shaped around either path, so let us know what you are hoping for.

Will there be chances to perform or play with others?

Yes, and saxophone players are the backbone of several YMM groups. Students can join Jazz 1, Jazz 2 (Big Band), Adult Jazz Ensemble, Rock & Pop 1 & 2, Groove Orchestra, and Innovate groups, with termly performance opportunities. Getting into a big band is a highlight many sax students look forward to.
