FAQs

My child has never played a note. Can they really start from scratch?

Absolutely. Trombone is a brilliant beginner brass instrument — the slide makes it easy to understand pitch intuitively, and a strong, satisfying sound comes with good breath support from early on. All lessons are one to one, so the pace is set around the learner.

Do we need a trombone at home to practise on?

Yes — regular practice is important for developing breath support and slide position accuracy. Student trombones are available at sensible prices and are also widely available to hire. Your tutor can advise on the right option for starting out.

How much practice does trombone really need?

A little and often beats one long session. Even a few minutes most days helps technique and musical memory settle, and your tutor will set goals that fit around school and family life. The aim is steady, enjoyable progress rather than pressure.

What kind of music will I get to play?

Trombone is at home in jazz, classical, Latin, funk, and pop music. Lessons cover tone production, technique, sight-reading, and improvisation so you build a solid and versatile foundation from the start.

Can I work towards graded music exams?

Yes, if that is something you would like to aim for. Many students enjoy working towards graded exams as a way to mark their progress, while others happily play purely for the joy of it. Lessons can be shaped around either path, so let us know what you are hoping for.

Will there be chances to perform or play with others?

Yes, and trombone players are always welcome in YMM's ensembles. Students can join Jazz 1, Jazz 2 (Big Band), Adult Jazz Ensemble, Groove Orchestra, Salsa Group, and Innovate groups, with termly performance opportunities. Big band playing is a highlight that many trombone students look forward to from early on.
