FAQs

My child has never played a note. Can they really start from scratch?

Absolutely. Trumpet is one of the great beginner brass instruments — compact, exciting in sound, and deeply rewarding once the first clean notes arrive. All lessons are one to one, so the pace is set entirely around the learner.

Do we need a trumpet at home to practise on?

Yes — daily practice is particularly important for trumpet, where embouchure strength and breath support develop through consistent use. Student trumpets are widely available at sensible prices and also available to hire. Your tutor can advise on a good starting option.

How much practice does trumpet really need?

A little and often beats one long session. Even a few minutes most days helps technique and musical memory settle, and your tutor will set goals that fit around school and family life. The aim is steady, enjoyable progress rather than pressure.

What kind of music will I get to play?

Trumpet spans classical, jazz, Latin, and pop music. From lyrical melodies and orchestral excerpts to jazz improvisation and big band leads, your tutor will build repertoire that connects with your taste and ambitions as technique develops.

Can I work towards graded music exams?

Yes, if that is something you would like to aim for. Many students enjoy working towards graded exams as a way to mark their progress, while others happily play purely for the joy of it. Lessons can be shaped around either path, so let us know what you are hoping for.

Will there be chances to perform or play with others?

Yes, and trumpeters are at the heart of several YMM groups. Students can join Jazz 1, Jazz 2 (Big Band), Adult Jazz Ensemble, Groove Orchestra, Salsa Group, and Innovate groups, with termly performance opportunities. Getting a first big band lead part is a moment many YMM trumpet students never forget.
