FAQs
My child has never played a note. Can they really start from scratch?
Absolutely. Tuned percussion — xylophone, marimba, vibraphone, and related instruments — is wonderfully accessible for beginners, and the visual layout of the keys makes pitch relationships intuitive from the very first lesson.
Do we need an instrument at home to practise on?
A practice pad or small xylophone is a good starting point for developing mallet technique and rudiments between sessions. Your tutor can advise on the most useful option for your stage of learning.
How much practice does tuned percussion really need?
A little and often beats one long session. Even a few minutes most days helps technique and musical memory settle, and your tutor will set goals that fit around school and family life. The aim is steady, enjoyable progress rather than pressure.
What kind of music will I get to play?
Tuned percussion spans classical orchestral playing, jazz vibraphone, marimba music from many traditions, and contemporary creative work. As technique develops, your tutor will introduce music from across this rich and varied world.
Can I work towards graded music exams?
Yes, if that is something you would like to aim for. Many students enjoy working towards graded exams as a way to mark their progress, while others happily play purely for the joy of it. Lessons can be shaped around either path, so let us know what you are hoping for.
Will there be chances to perform or play with others?
Yes. Tuned percussion students can join Groove Orchestra, Samba Drumming, and Innovate groups, with termly performance opportunities. Percussion players bring a unique energy to any ensemble and are always welcome across YMM's groups.
