FAQs
My child has never played a note. Can they really start from scratch?
Absolutely. Viola is a wonderful choice for beginners — warm, rich in sound, and often easier to get a good tone from early on than violin. All lessons are one to one, so everything is paced around the learner.
Do we need a viola at home to practise on?
Yes — regular practice between sessions is what makes the difference, especially for building bow technique. Violas come in a range of sizes to suit different arm lengths. Your tutor can advise on the right fit and whether to buy or hire.
How much practice does viola really need?
A little and often beats one long session. Even a few minutes most days helps technique and musical memory settle, and your tutor will set goals that fit around school and family life. The aim is steady, enjoyable progress rather than pressure.
What kind of music will I get to play?
Viola sits at the heart of the string family, and its repertoire spans classical and contemporary music, chamber playing, and ensemble work. As technique grows, your tutor will find music that suits your interests and level.
Can I work towards graded music exams?
Yes, if that is something you would like to aim for. Many students enjoy working towards graded exams as a way to mark their progress, while others happily play purely for the joy of it. Lessons can be shaped around either path, so let us know what you are hoping for.
Will there be chances to perform or play with others?
Yes. Viola players can join Junior Strings, Chamber Group, Groove Orchestra, and Innovate groups, with termly performance opportunities. Chamber playing in particular is something viola students often find becomes a lifelong passion.
