Music Theory lessons

Developing the formal foundations for understanding the architecture of music.

Why learn music theory at YMM?

Understand the language of music — how it works, how it’s written, and how to use that knowledge in your playing and listening. Music theory lessons at YMM cover notation, rhythm, harmony, keys, scales, and form, tailored to the student’s instrument and level. Support for ABRSM grade exams and GCSE/A-Level available.

Why study music theory at YMM?

Strong theory underpins everything — from reading music confidently and passing exams to composing, improvising, and making sense of what you hear. At YMM, theory tuition connects naturally with individual instrumental lessons and our Theory Support group, giving students the tools to become more complete and independent musicians.

FAQs

Do I need to have reached a certain level before starting music theory lessons?

No. Theory lessons at YMM are available from complete beginner level all the way through to diploma standard. Whether you are just starting to read music or preparing for a Grade 5 theory exam, lessons are tailored to where you are right now.

Can theory lessons help with my instrument lessons?

Absolutely — and this is one of the biggest benefits. Music theory unlocks what you are doing on your instrument: understanding keys, chords, rhythm, and structure makes sight-reading faster, improvisation more confident, and practice more intelligent.

How much extra work does theory involve outside lessons?

Theory benefits from a little regular work — short written exercises, ear training, and notation practice between sessions add up quickly. Your tutor will set manageable tasks that fit around school and other musical commitments.

Can I work towards graded music theory exams?

Yes. Grade 5 theory is particularly popular as it is a prerequisite for many graded practical exams at higher levels. YMM tutors can prepare you for any ABRSM or Trinity theory grade, as well as supporting A-Level and diploma-level theory.

I play in a group at YMM. Will theory lessons help with that?

Very much so. Understanding how the harmony and structure of the music you play in groups like Jazz 1, Jazz 2 (Big Band), Chamber Group, or Innovate actually works makes you a better ensemble musician. Many group leaders actively encourage students to take theory lessons alongside their group work.
