Why learn composition at YMM?
Find and develop your own musical voice. Composition lessons at YMM guide students through melody writing, harmony, structure, and orchestration — working in whatever style excites them, from classical and film music to jazz, pop, and contemporary. Support for GCSE and A-Level composition coursework is also available.
Why study composition at YMM?
Composition transforms a musician into someone who can create their own concepts and compositional palette. At YMM, students can connect their compositional work with our Innovate and Groove Orchestra groups, with the possibility of having original pieces workshopped and performed by real ensembles.

FAQs
What if I have never written a piece of music before?
That is exactly where many students start. Composition lessons begin wherever you are — from your very first musical idea through to polished pieces at an advanced level. All lessons are one to one and entirely paced around you.
Does composition have to be classical or written out in notation?
Not at all. Composition at YMM covers a wide range of styles and approaches — from notated classical and jazz writing to electronic, folk, and popular music. Your tutor will work with whatever creative direction interests you.
How much theory do I need to know before I start composing?
Some musical understanding helps, but you do not need to have done formal theory study first. Many students develop their theory and composition skills in parallel — the two feed each other very naturally.
Can composition lessons support GCSE or A-Level coursework?
Yes. GCSE and A-Level composition coursework is a significant part of exam grades, and YMM tutors are experienced in helping students develop and refine original work to meet exam board requirements. Lessons can be focused entirely around coursework deadlines if needed.
Will I be able to hear my music performed?
Yes, wherever possible. YMM's groups — especially Innovate 1, Innovate 2, and Chamber Group — provide real opportunities for student compositions to be rehearsed and performed by live musicians, which is an invaluable part of learning to compose.
